How to Avoid Damaging RC Screw Heads
The head is the top of a screw, where your tool goes. If that opening becomes worn or rounded, the tool can slip instead of turning the screw. The right tool and careful use help you avoid this damage.
Before working on your RC vehicle, find the manual for your exact model and version. Check the screw details and any instructions that came with your replacement kit.
1. Match the tool to the screw
Use the tool type and size listed in the instructions. The tip should sit fully in the screw head and hold firmly. A tip that is too small can slip. One that is too large may not go all the way in.
2. Check the tool tip before using it
Look for worn edges, bends or other damage. Replace a damaged tip rather than pressing harder to make it work. Use the tool to turn screws, not to pry parts apart.
3. Keep the tool in line with the screw
Hold the tool straight along the screw and keep steady pressure toward it as you turn. Working at an angle makes it easier for the tip to slip.
4. Stop if something feels wrong
Follow the model maker's tightening instructions. Do not keep turning once the tool starts to slip. If a screw will not turn smoothly, stop and check the screw, tool and instructions before continuing.
What if the screw head is already damaged?
Pause the repair. Note the screw's place in the model manual and keep the nearby parts together. Ask the model maker or a hobby shop for help with the exact screw and location. Repeatedly forcing a slipping tool can make the damage worse.
A new tool cannot promise to repair an already damaged screw. Check what needs replacing before you order parts.
Does buying a screw kit solve the problem?
First check what caused the trouble and which part needs replacing. Read the manual and the kit's product page. Do not assume a kit includes every special screw or pin, or that a kit for a similar model will work.
At J-M SUPPLIES RC Parts Store, start with your full RC model name and number. Check the kit details before you buy, and ask if anything is unclear.
